What would bring people to accept authority of another without being forced or bribed and instead establish inner connection with their leader?
A higher purpose which transcends both the leader and the follower and gives their lives greater meaning and direction. For most people that would mean to make the world a better place for all mankind. By contrast Moses wanted to make the world a dwelling for God, because he was concerned with Creator's purpose. Being a messenger of God, Moses also knew, without a doubt, that when this mission was accomplished, man's life here would be also pleasant and comfortable. But what made Moses a model of ultimate leadership was identification with Divine objective, which transcended his personal self.
Zohar (the hidden light of Torah, known as Kabbalah) teaches us that in every generation there is an extension and continuation of Moses, the father of all the prophets, who is the head of generation. In our generation this individual is the Lubavitcher Rebbe King Moshiach.
As a preschool child the Rebbe was already forming in his mind a picture of future Redemption - a liberation that will truly explain all the difficulties we have undergone. And as part of this Redemption - a king, who has nobody above him, but God alone.
This manifestation of the Ultimate Redemption for the whole world became the life mission of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. In his first public address after accepting leadership in 1951 he envisioned that it would be this generation that would draw the Divinity of the era of Moshiach down to this physical world. There wasn't a talk in which the Rebbe did not express the imperative to do all that we can to make this prophecy finally a reality. Finally, just like Mamash in "King without a Crown", he charged this mission over to us with these words:
"All that I can possibly do is to give the matter over to you. Now, do everything you can to bring Moshiach, here and now, immediately... I have done whatever I can; from now on, you must do whatever you can."
Of all people, the Lubavitcher Rebbe King Moshiach personifies truth, for even in relation to other great leaders who embodied this quality, he stands out as having been chosen by Divine Providence to bring about the culmination of the process. He wants completion and stands for totality and consistency.
For him nothing less then realization of Creator's ultimate plan for the world will do. He will not rest until every human being will be out of the dark, both materially and spiritually, until the world conforms to the highest ideals of Godliness, righteousness, knowledge and goodness. So what's required of us to complete the picture?
